A: Prologue

I am officially rewriting this entire story. Consider this a 'first draft' of sorts. The most updated version is on Wattpad, here. I may or may not be updating here. Sorry!

“He is growing antsy again. It’s starting to show.” The voice was soft and delicate, like the wings of a moth against the pages of a book.
“There will be other things for him to play with, do not despair.” The second voice seemed younger and slightly androgynous, yet the clarity of it rippled through the darkness.
“Why would I despair? He’s your problem,” she replied.
“The next will last longer, I assure you,” said the young voice.
“What, more than a month? Your choices are weak and frail. We would be better off letting him pick his own.”
The young voice let out a disgusted sigh, as if he had heard this reply too many times. “My new choice will last decades.”
“You said that about the last one.”
“This one is stronger. Different. In fact, you may know someone quite like him.”
An exaggerated sigh. “I doubt it. I hardly recall anything anymore.”
“Don’t lie,” he scolded.
“I’m not.”
“And don’t pout.”
Silence for a moment.
“You know what happens when you leave him alone,” the soft voice finally said.
“Yes.”
“He will destroy it all. Again.”
“Yes.”
“Then why do you sit here?”
“Patience,” the young voice said. Another moment of silence. “I told you to stop pouting.”
“I’m not,” growled back the once soft voice.
“You have been since you went on your little… excursion.”
“I’m bored. I longed for the warmth again, for the touch of humanity and the whispers of the wind.”
“Is that why you went to her dwelling?” he asked.
“I helped build it; I have every right to be there.”
“She noticed you.”
“So? I do not fear her.”
The sentence hung in the air, weighing on them both like a boulder.
The gentle voice let out a quivering sigh. “He’s calling you,” she whispered. “Even I can feel it.”
“Does he hurt you?” The young voice sounded oddly concerned.
“Certainly not as much as he does you.”
A pause.
“He is my brother.”
“A brother who will destroy this world.”
